A film showing the various locomotives used by West Coast Railway Company whilst operating the Windermere Branch Line from Oxenholme, after Northern Rail withdrew the service following a various cock ups to do with the May 2018 timetable change. Buses were laid on instead of trains, so West Coast Railway Company stepped into the breach. This film is set out as if the viewer was taking a trip fr...

What a beautiful film. (I was there on that very last day of operation in 1972).
When did the fairlie ferry service end. I was just wondering.
Makes you want to weep. Politicians with zero vision apart from the balance sheet. You couldn't even begin to guess the huge number of passengers this line would carry today.
Dianna In her own words 😊
This old
Also great footage of NBL built loco's being loaded for export.
Excellent........the first ship at the beginning of your clip is the Queen Mary II, a Clyde ferry. It was originally named just Queen Mary, but in 1934 Cunard requested this name for their new super liner, thus this Clyde work horse was renamed, and did not get it's proper name back until the Liner was taken out of service in the late 60's and preserved in the U.S.
Your probably aware, but if not, the Queen Mary is once again docked on the Clyde at Govan undergoing restoration. 👍🏻
Cycled up that hill from the ferry blowing out of my arse at the top
Brings back some memories......should never have closed.
Where was the slipway/dock in Fairlie?
Shocking!!! Thank goodness it's beautiful again now ❤
Thank goodness Scotland has a government in Holyrood doing things that Westminster will not do to keep this country beautifull
What an interesting video. I love Keswick always wanted to know a little more about the lost line
Everyone in this video is dead
Troutbeck station master reminiscing of his time there, what wonderful nostalgia.
What a grand film. My dad Donald Clarke was station master at Blencow and Penruddock before going to Heysham Harbour
Great video, but the music is dreadful! old Tich.
Great film. Lovely Cumberland accents of the retired locals too.
Himself, along with "Bid Dan" Mc'Cleoud" and Sandy Matheson will live on in Highland folklore.
I wish they never removed the line, it won’t be coming back now, they’re selling land on the old railway
I always felt that Bute was ideally suited to this run rather than wasting Clansman on a (Mickey Mouse) run, she should have been assigned to Islay right from the start.
Loch Arkaig was always one of my favourites. You could get up close with all aspects of her operations and many's the time I 've sailed on her from Mallaig via Kyle and Raasay to Portree.
A Country now lost.
WOW, Brilliant .Brilliant Film.I recently took the Bus (28th December 2022) from Penrith to Cockermouth. I would have given anything to have travelled on this Train 50 Years ago.Fantastic History and wonderful stories. Serious, tragic mistake to close this Line🤐Can You imagine running this a Heritage line these Day's? It would Definately be the most visited in the Country with the Tourism in the Lakes.Come on Cumbria" DO IT" And now I will show You what We have lost!!!!!!!! (Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol) What fasinating people.Wish I could have met them!!!!!!!!!
Where the landowners replaced people with sheep.
These ferries ⛴ made Scotland a magical place ….. as a boy my father took us to the West Coast it was an adventure- Now it’s bridges & Ipads …….
Money IS the root of all evil.
It was another stupid decision made by a government that was enamoured with the car, Thatcher personified the attitude that the railways were outdated from the 50’s that pervaded political thinking at the time. This railway would be a goldmine today and massively reduce the huge traffic problems caused by 18 million tourists per year. The other advantage would be the reduction in pollution, throughout the country cars are a major consumer of energy and the biggest producers of pollution, if we’d continued to invest in trains at half the rate of motorways or even worse at 30% of the cost of privatisation we’d have the best transport system in the world.
Some of the most beautiful scenery in the world 🌎 wow fantastic!
Wonderful program Ships and Yards. I would love to see more about those who worked in those yards Men and Women . Billy Connelly put the spark of the Arch 😁 Welder in my ? Possibly a Bible pun in the Arch .All about and aboard 2 by 2 who let the snake in. Boot them off . Noah forgot they swim and become polatition's. I do love Ships and Glasgow. I just want to make people feel better while learning.
Stv today ,still use those old monologue ,grainy cameras to this day !
This is most definitely the ATHENIA and the prewar CANTON being launched. I can read ATHENIA on her bows.
RMS CANTON 3...Miss Thalia Shaw....1938
Took the train between Penrith and Keswick in 1955,1956 and 1957 when going to Keswick for our holidays.
We travelled this route often in the 1950’s going to visit relatives in Threlkeld, it was a great journey. We travelled from Whitehaven to Threlkeld, always on time. The people in the surrounding areas were so dependent on the railway, it was a truly wonderful experience.
Considering the gridlock in Keswick and the roads full of traffic all year round in the Lake District....it makes sense to reopen this line ...it would reduce air pollution be the Green way to travel ..and would easily pay for itself..
Brilliant. Thanks for sharing. We walked the K2T trail today over this line and there is just so much history over one of the most beautiful sections of any line in the UK. Finding this just bought it all to life. Thank you for sharing.
Nice.
What happened
Some wonderful characters, stories and voices in this film! It was a big mistake shutting down all those old branch lines.
Great stuff!
But what a brilliantly beautiful noise !
What a crime for this line to be shut!
This is just incredible
Canton was launched in 1939.
just did the keswick to threlkeld railway walk,2021,loved it
Served as a catering boy 👦 on the MV Loch Ard in 1968. Loved the trips to the islands. As I was from Glasgow and didn’t speak Gaelic the crew were a bit of standoffish until they wanted extra food!
I can just about remember Dad taking me on a train from Keswick to Cockermouth and back during the last year that section was open. He had some of the trip on cine film but sadly I don't know where that is now.
Memories! Hope that this works for you. Enjoy
Nice seeing a video off the launching of the 3 original McBraynes car ferries
I was there as a little lad on the last day, they put on a lovely Derby Lightweight if memory serves me right and there was some weirdness that my dad went down to chat to the signalman in the box a few hundred yards along the lifted section where the platform was one not in use. Inside the booking hall someone had set up a lovely OO layout of the area and my brother who was only a toddler derailed a train much to the consternation of the railway bloke and blamed it on me so I got taken outside and given a whacking when I had stood there with hands behind me back... little brothers are such a pain :S We stopped by on our way back down from Scotland at end of our holiday and the place was deserted, like WW3 had happened and I remember the first episode of Survivors and said that place (Barfield) was just like Keswick lol Now if me dad had been quicker on the mark he with screwdriver could have snagged plenty of souvenirs that day lol
